Practice Portuguese on video chat: Brazil and Portugal

To practice Portuguese on video chat, ask which variety the other person prefers and start with an everyday topic. Brazilian and European Portuguese share a language but may differ in vocabulary and address. Ask for contextual examples instead of assuming a variant is wrong.

Ask about their variety without turning it into a label

Someone may use words from different regions. Nationality and speech are not equivalent, and a profile preference does not establish anyone's origin. Ask about expressions they use and avoid generalizing from one exchange.

These examples are a starting point. Tu, você and other forms of address vary by region, relationship and context.

  • Olá, estou a aprender português. — Hello, I'm learning Portuguese; a construction common in Portugal.
  • Olá, estou aprendendo português. — Hello, I'm learning Portuguese; a construction common in Brazil.
  • Como se diz isso onde você mora? — How do you say that where you live? Accept a general region as an answer.

Compare words in complete sentences

These pairs are common examples, not an exhaustive catalog of regional usage. Ask for a sentence with the word to understand where it fits.

Phrases to ask for support and continue

If a word sounds familiar but does not fit, ask before translating it into your own language. Explain an idea with other words and check understanding; you do not need the exact term to keep your turn.

  • Pode repetir mais devagar? — Could you repeat more slowly?
  • O que significa essa palavra? — What does that word mean?
  • Pode dar um exemplo? — Could you give an example?
  • Gosto de música. Que tipo de música prefere? — I like music. What kind of music do you prefer?

Exercise: an imaginary visit

Imagine a day out in a city without saying where you live or describing a real journey. The scenario lets you use transport, food and preferences.

  1. 1

    Suggest

Say what you prefer: visiting a museum, walking or trying a dish. Use Prefiro… — I prefer…

  2. 2

    Ask

Ask for a transport or food recommendation in the imaginary scenario.

  3. 3

    Compare

Choose a word from the table and ask for a sentence using your partner's variant.

  4. 4

    Recall

Note the sentence and context afterwards. Do not turn it into a rule you attribute to all speakers.

Frequently asked questions

Must I choose Brazilian or European Portuguese to talk?

You can practice understanding both. If working on a particular pronunciation or vocabulary, explain your preference and ask whether they want to help; do not assume their variety from the country in their profile.

What if a Portuguese word resembles Spanish?

Confirm its meaning in the sentence. Ask O que significa essa palavra? and request an example before assuming it means the same in Spanish.
