Practice Italian on video chat: a simple outline

To practice Italian on video chat, prepare a greeting, a question about interests and a request for help. Use an outline as support, not a script to recite. Food lets you practice preferences, describe a dish and ask for a recommendation without sharing personal details.

An opening outline that leaves room for a reply

Ciao suits an informal exchange. If the other person prefers formal address, adjust the greeting and questions. Before practicing, check whether they want to speak Italian.

Begin with a phrase you can adapt to a real interest. Do not memorize a long story: an unexpected reply would make it difficult to continue.

  • Ciao, sto imparando l'italiano. Ti va di parlare un po'? — Hello, I'm learning Italian. Would you like to talk a little?
  • Mi piace cucinare. E a te? — I enjoy cooking. And you?
  • Possiamo parlare di cibo o di film. — We can talk about food or films.

Describe food without a huge vocabulary

Choose a familiar dish and two characteristics: easy, sweet, spicy or quick to prepare. Ask about preferences without requesting regular restaurant addresses or specific routines.

Questions about food in Italian

Qual è il tuo piatto preferito? What is your favorite dish?
Preferisci cucinare o mangiare fuori?Do you prefer cooking or eating out?
È facile da preparare? Is it easy to prepare?
Quali ingredienti servono?Which ingredients do you need?

Confirm the meaning before changing topic

Italian and Spanish may seem similar, but guessing every word does not always work. Ask for an example or rephrasing when an expression changes the meaning of the answer.

  • Puoi ripetere, per favore? — Could you repeat, please?
  • Puoi parlare più lentamente? — Could you speak more slowly?
  • Che cosa significa? — What does it mean?
  • Puoi fare un esempio? — Could you give an example?

Exercise: exchange a three-step recipe

You do not need to teach cooking or give professional instructions. The aim is to organize a short explanation and understand the other person's.

  1. 1

    Choose

Introduce a simple dish with Mi piace… — I like… and explain one reason.

  2. 2

    Organize

Use prima — first, poi — then and infine — finally to describe three actions.

  3. 3

    Listen

Ask for a different recipe or dish. Summarize one ingredient and one action before asking for another detail.

  4. 4

    Finish

Grazie per la chiacchierata! — Thanks for the chat! Note the connectors you used without reading.

Bring your practice to notmegle

Frequently asked questions

How do I avoid reading the whole outline when practicing Italian?

Write just three keywords: greeting, topic and help. Look at the full phrase only if you get stuck, then listen again before choosing your next question.

What simple topic works for a first Italian chat?

A favorite dish lets you ask about tastes, ingredients and steps. If they do not want to discuss food, offer films or music and respect their choice.
