Start with tastes, not a knowledge test
What have you listened to lately? allows an artist, song or style. Avoid demanding the best album of a decade or mocking a preference. You can continue even if you do not know the name mentioned.
If the other person does not listen to much music, offer another topic. A shared interest is not required for a respectful chat.
- Which song do you want to hear when you need cheering up?
- Do you prefer discovering new artists or returning to favorites?
- What catches your attention first: lyrics, voice or rhythm?
- Is there a style you would like to understand better?
Turn an answer into an exchange
Choose a detail from the answer and ask about it. Then share a general experience. You do not need to show a streaming account or open links to explain why you like a song.
| Respuesta inicial | Follow-up question |
|---|---|
| Me gusta el jazz | Are you drawn to rhythm, instruments or improvisation? |
| Escucho bandas sonoras | Are they more interesting when you know the film or on their own? |
| Prefiero música en directo | What changes for you between an album and a performance? |
| No tengo un estilo favorito | Do you choose music based on mood or activity? |
Activity: recommend a song for a scene
Imagine a fictional trip, quiet afternoon or film opening. Each person suggests a song or describes a sound. You do not need to play music during the call.
- 1
Choose a scene
Agree on an imaginary situation unrelated to where you live or your real routine.
- 2
Recommend
Name the title and artist if you remember, or describe the style. Explain two reasons for your choice.
- 3
Compare
Ask what the other person would choose and what feeling they want to create.
- 4
Expand
Change one element of the scene and decide whether to keep the choice. You can finish without sharing accounts.
Use the topic to practice another language too
In English, start with What kind of music do you enjoy? and follow with What do you like about it? Instead of translating a whole song, describe how it makes you feel or why it interests you.
Ask before playing audio: it may make it harder to hear each other. Do not record the conversation or require personal playlists; mentioning a title is enough for recommendations.
Bring your practice to notmegle
notmegle offers browser-based 1:1 video conversations for adults 18+ and requires an account. Before searching, prepare your camera and microphone, review available preferences and agree on the topic and language with your partner.
A preference does not guarantee an immediate match or establish someone's level or native-speaker status. The service does not replace lessons, assessment or a teacher. You can move on, block or report when needed.

Frequently asked questions
What if I do not know the artist they mention?
Ask what they like about the music or which song they recommend starting with. Listen to the description without pretending to know the artist or opening a link.
Do I need to share my music profile?
No. Mention a song, describe a style or recommend an album verbally. Decide separately whether to share an account and what information it reveals.
